Activity Ideas

Education Week is a time to celebrate the innovation and achievements of Victorian government schools and demonstrate what vibrant places of learning they are for students of all ages!

There are lots of ways for schools to get involved. Below is a list of activities that might prompt some ideas.

You don’t have to do it alone – why not join with another local school to hold a special event or activity?

  • Open Day – invite local parents along to an open day to learn more about your school…organise student demonstrations and displays for visitors to see and experience
  • Back to School Day - invite former students back to your school to speak about their careers or other success stories. For information about how to host a Back to School Day event, see Back to School Day
  • Talent Quest – invite students to showcase their performing arts prowess during a lunchtime talent search
  • Be a Buddy Day – where older students interact with or mentor their younger peers
  • Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) – hold a pyjama party to celebrate your school’s involvement in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. BYO teddy!
  • Student Debate – give students their say on community and global issues such as: should the age for ‘learner’ driver eligibility be reduced; is the gap between rich and poor increasing; should smoking be banned in all public places
  • Career Day – invite local business representatives to talk to students about career options. For ideas, contact a representative at your Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN)
  • Science Family Day – invite parents to participate in classroom experiments with their children
  • Art Exhibition – exhibit your students’ work (literary, art or craft) at a local shopping centre or other venue
  • Parents/Grandparents Day – invite students’ parents or grandparents to come along to class for a morning or afternoon
  • Celebrate Success – create a student mural that depicts your school’s strengths and its links to your local community
  • Education Week breakfast – start the week with a celebratory breakfast
  • Film Festival – get students to create their own five-minute documentaries about school life – interviewing other students and teachers. Hold lunch-time sessions to premiere the documentaries during Education Week
