Victoria has one of the best performing government school systems in the world.
From August 25-30, the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development presented the Connections 2010 classroom at the Shanghai World Expo.
The classroom, one of the most advanced school classrooms ever built, was in the Future Pavilion in the Urban Best Practice Area.
In the classroom, twenty Victorian school students were taught a program around the Expo themes Better City, Better Life by four Victorian teachers; and 40 students from science specialist Shanghai Jin Cai High School were taught a program on nanotechnology, specially taught and devised for them by three Victorian teachers.
The classroom showcased Victorian government school education and Victoria as a great place to live and study. Tours around the classroom ran while the classroom was operating. Events and video technology linked the classroom with Victorian government schools and Victorian high-tech learning centres. Victorian education experts presented seminar programs for the Chinese education sector on the Victorian education system covering topics such as school design and Victorian government school system reform. Open days were held for families planning international education for their children.
The Victorian Department of Industry, Innovation and Regional Development is linking groups of PhD students in Shanghai via videoconference to higher education and research institutions in Victoria.
