Children's Week

Children’s Week will be celebrated by Victorian government schools, kindergartens and childcare and maternal health centres from 18 – 26 October 2008.
During the week, schools, kindergartens and childcare and maternal health centres are invited to host activities that focus the community on the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children and young people. Those planning activities can promote their event on this website. See Register your Activity.
In addition, a wide range of community events and activities are presented across the country to celebrate Children’s Week. Information on Victorian events and activities will be posted on this site shortly.
Children’s Week is held each year to coincide with Universal Children’s Day on Wednesday 22 October.
It is based on articles expressed in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, summarised briefly as emphasising play, wellbeing and protection.
The United Nations has declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation, Planet Earth, the Potato, Languages, and the Reef – so why not create your activity around one of these themes?
Highlights of Children’s Week will include:
- Launch (see What's On) - a family fun day at the Melbourne Zoo, Sunday 19 October, 2008, with FREE ENTRY for children under 15 years of age.
- Awards – aimed at making communities more child and family friendly, these awards are presented by the Department to celebrate Victorians who are working to improve the health, learning and development of children.
- Calendar of Events (see What's On) - a variety of events and activities will be held by the Department in partnership with education stakeholders across the state.
