Children's Week event information
Children's and History Week Gallery and Garden Party
Belgrave Lake Park Cottage Playgroup
Help us to celebrate the opening of a new Indigenous Sensory Garden featuring a dry-river bed, Indigenous plants and mosaic rock art. We will also be celebrating more than 30 years that the Cottage has been a volunteer operated playgroup space for the local community as part of History Week. On the day, we will be sharing stories and memories from past and present members on the role the Cottage has played over three generations. Activities on the day include:
- Creating a time capsule for 2017 reflecting the historical context of the event. A short selection of questions will be available for children and parents to complete to add to our time capsule that will be buried in our new garden to be opened in 25 years. Children may also choose to add pictures they can draw on the day.
- A hands on mosaic workshop. Families can join in with the rock art by helping to create mosaic handprints on the large rocks that will be included in the garden. A local artist will be guiding children and parents in the skills needed, exploring the creative process of mosaic using the children's handprints. The garden will include a collection of native animal sculptures that the children can then find on a nature hunt that will be an ongoing activity during the day.
- Our Art room will be open and available for carer-led colouring and craft activities of native animals found around the local area. Highlighting the natural environment that surrounds The Cottage.
- A story time session during the event for children to join. We aim to include stories relating to native animals and the Australian Bush as well as Indigenous culture. The books will then be available throughout the day for families to read with their children.
