Nasir Sobhani rides through Melbourne’s streets on his skateboard with the tools of trade — a brush, a comb, a clipper and razors. He’s offering free haircuts to the city’s homeless.
After graduating from TAFE in hairdressing, The Street’s Barber has found his purpose in life by infusing his passion for the trade with a deeper meaning.
‘I look for people that are living on the streets and I try to offer them a haircut, a face shave or even my companionship,’ he says.
‘When I first meet people on the streets, they’re really timid, they’re really shy.
‘But once they see their reflection in the mirror, the joy on their face, the notion of feeling valued is just priceless.
‘Something has simple as a haircut may not be a big deal for some, but a haircut can really empower people … make them feel they’re worthy of love and being treated with respect.
‘It may be a superficial change, but if that can change a frame of reference or an inner reflection about themselves, I guess that’s just the first step, you know.’
