The Victorian Government's Vision for Languages Education

The Victorian Government has made a long-term commitment to revolutionise languages education in Victorian schools, which includes a commitment to introduce compulsory languages education for all government school students from Prep to Year 10 by 2025.

The Victorian Government’s Vision for Languages Education was launched by the Minister for Education and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship on Monday 7 November, 2011.

This document outlines the Government’s commitments to languages education and explains why it has made this a priority, covering the benefits for a student's personal development, as well as the social and economic benefits. 

The Victorian Government's Vision for Languages Education:

  • describes Victoria’s strengths and challenges and the principles on which the Government’s approach to languages education is based  - participation, quality, diversity and partnership
  • outlines the commitments the Government has made so far, such as the increase in per capita grants for Community Languages Schools from $120 to $190
  • describes key actions that have been taken as a first step toward achieving the Government’s vision, including the establishment of a Ministerial Advisory Council for a Multilingual and Multicultural Victoria and the implementation of three short-term strategic initiatives - covering research, training and cluster support
  • sets out an approach for long-term planning and implementation.
