Elwood College
Students at Elwood College are enjoying brand new 21st century learning facilities, built as part of the Building the Education Revolution (BER) program.
The school has a science and language centre which has allowed the school to enhance its science teaching, and give students an improved environment to study French and Japanese. It is also used for ESL studies.
Principal Rhonda Holt, says teachers’ and students’ responses to the new facilities have been enthusiastic.
She says, “Our new centre provides us with a taste of what is critical to support educators in delivering a curriculum that prepares students for the 21st century – agile learning spaces.
“Teachers can utilise the design to foster in students attributes of lifelong learning such as self direction, collaboration, critical analysis, creativity, prioritisation, presentation and reflection. These skills are much harder to incorporate into everyday programs conducted in sterile, old world, four walled classrooms.”
Hiroki Kurihara, a Japanese teacher at the school, believes the new spaces benefit students by making them think about how they can use the spaces for learning.
He says, “The spaces support students to do different activities that suit them, and give them more options about how they want to learn.”
