The Victorian Plan for Aboriginal Children and Young People (2010-2020)

A Victorian Plan for Aboriginal Children and Young People (2010-2020) is currently being developed which will spell out Victoria’s goals, actions and measures of progress in improving the health, safety, development, learning and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and young people across the state over the next ten years (2010-2020). The Plan will complement Dardee Boorai: the Victorian Charter of Safety and Wellbeing for Aboriginal Children and Young People and will fulfil the requirement to report on progress, actions and outcomes for Aboriginal children as outlined in The Child Wellbeing and Safety Act (2005).

How is feedback being gathered for the Plan?

The consultation process for the Plan commenced in March 2009 and will continue until late 2009 with interviews, focus groups and a number of surveys being gathered from Aboriginal organisations, Aboriginal families and young people as well as those who work with Aboriginal families.

How will the voices of Aboriginal children and young people be included in the Plan?

A number of focus groups will be held with Aboriginal young people and parents/carers across the state. In addition, a digital storytelling workshop has been arranged where a group of Aboriginal young people will record their own stories and aspirations for the future. This will also feed into the Plan.

How will the Aboriginal community provide input into the Plan?

The development of the Plan is being overseen by the Aboriginal Children and Families Advisory Committee which is made up of a number of Aboriginal elders and representatives from the Victorian Indigenous Youth Advisory Council (VIYAC) who work with Aboriginal children and young people across the state.

Where can I get more information about the development of the Plan?

A discussion paper (Word - 88Kb) has been prepared to stimulate discussion around some of the key issues being considered as part of the development of the Plan.

If you would like to provide your views or input into the development of the Plan, you are invited to complete the online survey before Friday 30 October 2009.
