Freedom of Information
The Freedom of Information Act 1982 provides you with the right to access information in the possession of the State Government of Victoria, including this Department.
The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act gives you:
- the right to access documents about your personal affairs and the activities of government agencies; and
- the right to request that incorrect or misleading information held by an agency about you be amended or removed.
The FOI Act specifies that some documents may be exempt from release to protect public interests and the private or business affairs of people about whom the government, including this Department, holds information.
While the FOI Act provides a formal process for accessing information held by the Department, including state government schools, some information may be accessed without making a request through FOI. For instance, parents or guardians can access their child’s academic reports or curriculum details directly through their school, teachers can access their teacher histories, and past students can access their records, generally without making a request through FOI.
