Individual Award Categories

​​​​​​There are six individual award categories available for nomination in the 2018 Victorian Training Awards. The Awards improves the confidence and self-esteem of students and gives students a chance to showcase their quality skills and journey to their peers, industry and the Victorian community. 

Winners will become Ambassadors for the 2019 Victorian Training Awards and the Victorian training and TAFE system. 

The People's Choice Award will be presented to a finalist from a selected individual category. Victorian's will have the opportunity via social media to vote, with the winner announced at the Awards Ceremony.

Trainee of the Year

The Trainee of the Year Award is presented to a Victorian trainee who is undertaking a traineeship and has been outstanding in all aspects of their training.

To nominate for this award, the nominee must be a permanent resident of Victoria, not enrolled in school and have completed, or be due to complete, their training in the period of 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2018.

The winner of this award will be nominated by Victoria for the Australian Apprentice (Trainee) of the Year Award at the Australian Training Awards and receive $5000 prize money.

Apprentice of the Year

The Apprentice of the Year Award is presented to a Victorian Apprentice who has been outstanding in all aspects of their trade.

To nominate for this award, the nominee must be a permanent resident of Victoria, not still be enrolled in school and have completed or be due to complete their training in the period of 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2018.

The winner of this award will be nominated by Victoria for the Australian Apprentice of the
Year Award at the Australian Training Awards and receive $5000 prize money.​

Vocational Student of the Year

The Vocational Student of the Year Award recognises an outstanding student’s achievement in a course of study leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

To nominate for this award, the nominee must be a permanent resident of Victoria, be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student and have completed or be due to complete their training in the period of 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2018.

The winner of this award will be nominated by Victoria for the Australian Vocational Student of the Year Award at the Australian Training Awards and receive $5000 prize money.

School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year

The School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Award is presented to a student who is undertaking a Certificate II or above qualification as a part-time Victorian school-based apprentice or trainee. The Award recognises the student’s commitment to their formal studies at school, and in the workplace. 

To nominate for this award, the nominee must be a permanent resident of Victoria, still be enrolled in school and undertaking or completed a Certificate II or above qualification through a Victorian school-based apprenticeship or traineeship and still be enrolled in school from 1 October 2017 to 31 December 2018.

Koorie Student of the Year

The Victorian Koorie Student of the Year Award recognises the achievement of a Koorie student who displays a strong understanding and knowledge of the vocational education and training system and demonstrates the relevance of lifelong learning for themselves and their community.

To nominate for the award, the nominee must be a permanent resident of Victoria and identify as an Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander.

The winner of this award will be nominated by Victoria for the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Award at the Australian Training Awards and receive $5000 prize money.​

Teacher/Trainer of the Year

The Teacher/Trainer of the Year Award recognises innovation and excellence by a teacher/trainer providing nationally recognised training to students in the Victorian training and TAFE system.

To nominate for the award, the nominee must be a qualified teacher/trainer employed (or regularly contracted) by a registered training provider and delivered training in Victoria (from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017) which will lead/has lead to nationally recognised qualifications or statement of attainment.

​The winner of this award will be nominated by Victoria for the Australian VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year Award at the Australian Training Awards and receive​ $5000 prize money.

Supporting Evidence

The award criteria should be the focus of the nomination, however any relevant evidence may be provided to support the nomination.

Supporting evidence must not include additional responses to the criteria, but should include:

  • relevant training and/ or education certificates (required)
  • a written reference or letter of support from a teacher, trainer, principal or employer (required)
  • a photo of the nominee (required)
  • any recognition or achievement awards
  • other evidence supporting the claims made in your nomination.

Nominations close: Midnight on Monday 2 April 2018

Nominations will be evaluated by the Victorian Training Awards program team and only those eligible for the award will be entered into the judging rounds.

The judging consists of two rounds followed by an interview. All nominations are judged against the award criteria. Finalists will be contacted by the Victorian Training Awards program team to attend a panel interview to determine the winner.

All unsuccessful nominees will be notified.

The winner will be announced at the Awards Ceremony late August 2018.
